Cali


Cali, officially Santiago de Cali, is a Colombian municipality, capital of the Valle del Cauca department and the third most inhabited city in Colombia.

Located in the southwest of the country, over the Pacific Ocean in an extension of 200 kilometers.

It is characterized by having one of the best climate conditions, due to the West mountain range that blocks the humid wind front that comes from the Pacific Ocean, even though the prominent climate is the tropical savanna.

Cali differentiates from the rest for being one of the main economic and industrial center of the country, and the main economic, industrial and agricultural urban center of the Colombian southwest. It is also the “rumba” capital, the street festivity and dance.

How to get there


Air transport: It is one of the most important means of transportation for the city. The international airport, Alfonso Bonilla Aragón, is found 16 km of distance from Cali. There, all flights are handled and invoiced, both nationally as well as internationally, whether direct connections or for the country itself.

Sea transport: It is one of the most connected transportation networks, where you have the possibility of arriving either by bus or your own vehicle. Cali is located 10 hours away from Bogota city by car.

How to commute


You may get to the capital, from the North, through the driveway of la Caña, or through the modern Panorama road from Buga. From the South route, you may also have the possibility to arrive with the same comfort and transportation facilities.

Since the end of 2008, Cali has what is called MIO (Masivo integrado de Occidente). In it, a series of improvements were made for the public transportation, mainly for buses, allowing the renewal of its entire old fleet.

There are more than 43 thousand public service vehicles, including taxis, buses and regular shared transportation, allowing easy access to the different municipalities or cities, with the main objective of facilitating all what is needed as much as possible to the traveler or resident, when commuting.

We may find the following means of transportation:

Articulated bus: These types of buses belong to the new MIO corporate of Public transportation network. The main characteristic of these buses is the route it follows, called Troncales, which circulate in exclusive lanes and so may transport a great quantity of passengers quickly and easily.

Traditional bus: It is a bus of the old platform, but reformed. This type of bus circulates in the same city, over taking the consequences of heavy traffic jam due to a high volume of vehicles.

Microbuses: Another urban service that the city offers with a maximum capacity of 10 passengers.

Taxis: It is characterized by its particular yellow color.

Uber: It is a mobile application that allows to request a transportation service only from a smartphone with an associated credit card account. This service is based on treating the customer with high preference (security, comfort and services alike).

Bicycle: The bicycle network consists of 36 km within the city, with perspectives of improving the infrastructure at least up to 200 km, since it is one of the means of transportation that is less developed, but they are working on it to increase security measures for the pedestrians.

Practical information


  • Accommodation: There is a great variety of accommodation in Cali. The areas where you may stay depending on the preferences that the visitors or residents have, are the following: San Antonio, Avenida Sexta or Plaza de Cayzedo.
  • Climate:
    • Tropical Sabana climate: there are two distinctive seasons:
      · The dry season, between December and February.
      · The rainy season, between March and May and September and November, when there are abundant precipitations.
    • Average temperature: the average temperature falls around the 17 and 31º C throughout the year, thanks to the breeze that comes from the Pacific Ocean.
  • Languages: The official language is the Vallecaucano Spanish, even though in the city of Cali there are some speakers that neutralize these local aspects.
  • Health: The geographical distribution of the services offered shows a great quantity of clinics, those provided in the town as well as those provided as hospitalization services. There are 14 hospitals, 5 are top level, 75 health position centers, 23 health centers, and 8 basic assistance centers.
  • Educación: La educación que ofrece Cali está formada por:
    • Basic education: It is a fundamental right for infants, and the initial educational system consists of a comprehensive structure, which objective is to empower the child’s overall development from its birth till becoming a 6-year-old.
    • Secondary education and Bachiller: Among the most representative public educational School we may quote the following: The Santa Librada College, The Noraml Superior Farallones de Cali (NSFC), The Normal Superior Santiago de Cali, the Instituto Técnico Industrial Antoni José Camacho and the Institución Técnico Industrial Pedro Antonio Molina (IETIPAM).
    • Skilled work Education: Within the same universities, there is the possibility of specializing in certain skilled occupations. The most popular are the technical, electrician and mechanic specialties.
    • Universities: it divides into two levels: graduate (Technical Professional, Technological and Professional) and postgraduate (Masters, PH D and Doctorates). Cali offers the possibility of choosing among:
      · Public Universities (6 universities).
      · Private Universities (26 universities).
      · Other universities that are in Colombia.
