Culture

The culture has always carried a fundamental role in the history and development of the island. You may find a varied and broad cultural offer. Throughout the year you may find concerts, festivals, exhibitions, literary contests, and much more. The cultural center is Palma, which is very well known by its old town and night leisure activities. The museum visits, monuments and archeological findings will help understand better and enjoy more the many cultures that have left a legacy in these lands.

The same Balearic cultural diversity can also manifest itself through its own handicraft. You may find arts work in glass, clay, broidery, shoemaking, leather, textiles, pearls, silver articles, fancy jewelry and alike.

The center of Palma offers emblematic buildings capable to make you travel in real time: the Town hall, the cathedral of Palma, worldwide known for containing the biggest Levantine gothic style rose window, the Almudaina palace, the Arab baths, the Lonja, the Bellver Castle, one of the three unique castles of European circular floor plan.

  • Traditional festivities: Officially, the Calendar of the festivities appoints 12 days a year in the Balearic islands, apart from the specific days that each city or town has to celebrate its patron saint.

In Palma city as well as in other towns, some of the most traditional festivities transform streets and squares in a magical scenery. The most popular traditional festivities in Mallorca are “Sa Vermada” (Binissalem), the “Dijous Bo” (Inca), “La Dansa dels Cossiers” (Algaida, Montuiri, Pollença and Alaró), The “Fiestas de Sant Sebastià” (Palma), the “Revetlla i beneides de Sant Antoni” (in various towns) and the Battle between the Christians and muslims (Pollença and Sóller).

Also, in summer hundreds of festivities are celebrated in the streets. Each weekend from the end of June until the end of September, in different municipalities of the island, there are several festivities that take place in the streets during the night. Each of them has its own essence, Campanet fills up with people wearing fancy dresses with its summer carnival and Sineu covers itself in Pink with the “Much” party.
