Gastronomy


The Majorcan gastronomy enjoys of all the advantages of the well-known Mediterranean diet, which is acknowledged as the healthiest and most complete that exists now a days. The vegetable and cereals farming and pig herding in the interior of the island are common together with the coast fishing. The “Matanzas” (pig slaughter), a traditional activity, allows to use all parts of the pig, including the sausage products and lard or butter with which the ensaimadas are made.

Typical products and food


The most emblematical products which differentiate the island from the rest of the world are the ensaimada and the sobrasada (branded as protected geographically), followed by the majorcan almond, the extra olive virgin oil with protected designation origin, the olive, which is branded as with Protected designation origin and the wine with designation origin of Binissalem.

There are many majorcan typical plates, but the most popular usually are the majorcan soups, the “arroz brut”, the “tumbet”, the roasted suckling pig, “Escaldums”, the “frit mallorquí” and the “pa amb oli” combined with different sausages. As a sweet recipe we highlight the ensaimada, the coca de cuarto, the “Robiols”, the “crespells” and the “buñuelos de viento”. It is also important to point out that there are many existing local specialties, such as “coques de patata of Valldemossa”, the “sospirs of Manacor” or the famous cookies of Inca.

Restaurants


Mallorca offers a rich and varied list of restaurants, which go from an old and traditional cellar of autochthonous kitchen to the ones that specialize in “Pa amb Oli”, as well as the most sophisticated and international kitchen such as the nouvelle cuisine, going through the regional Spanish or of other countries such as France (creperies), Italy (pizzerias), Egypt, India, México, Argentina, China or Japan, among others.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the center of Palma, in the neighborhood “Sa Gerreria”, there is a great atmosphere that is formed by the Ruta Martiana. A route that includes twelve bars, in which you may taste the “pinchos” and “zuritos” for two euros.

Markets


All towns have a weekly market where you may find fruit and vegetables as well as local products such as the sobrasada or butifarrón and cheese. You will also find markets that offer several handicraft products such as leather handbags, jewelry made by hand, accessories and clothing.

There are also three municipality markets in Palma, Mercat de l’Olivar, the one of Santa Catalina and the one in Pere Garau, which divide into broad monothematic pavilion dedicated to fish, vegetables, meet and also aromatic fresh herbs and its famous capers that are exported worldwide.
